Abstract formatting
  1. All original study articles should be accompanied by a structured summary. It should include mandatory headings: aim, methods, results, conclusion. The length of the abstract is from 200 to 350 words.
  2. The review article and the clinical case reports should be accompanied by an unstructured abstract. The optimal length of the abstract is 200-300 words.
  3. The abstract should be followed by 5–6 keywords. Keywords should:
    reflect the main content of the article;
    do not repeat the terms of the title;
    use terms from the text of the article, as well as terms that define the subject area and include other important concepts that will facilitate and expand the ability to find the article by means of information retrieval system.
An original study article structure
  1. Introduction. It formulates the aim and a background of the research, briefly highlights the state of the issue with references to the most significant publications.
  2. Material and methods. Quantitative and qualitative characteristics of samples/patients should be presented in this section, and all research methods used in the study, including methods of statistical data processing. When mentioning devices and new drugs, the manufacturer and country should be indicated.
    Reports on randomized controlled trials should contain information on all the main elements of the study, including the protocol (study population, treatment or exposure, outcomes and rationale for statistical analysis), treatment assignment (randomization methods, methods of concealing the formation of treatment groups) and masking methods (ensuring 'blind' control). When describing statistical methods, the data obtained should be quantified and presented with appropriate measures of errors (such as confidence intervals). Do not rely solely on statistical testing of hypotheses, for example, using p-values that do not reflect the full extent of the information. In describing study design and statistical methods, references should be made to well-known manuals (textbooks) wherever possible, rather than to articles describing them for the first time.
  3. Results should be presented in a logical sequence in the text, tables and figures. All data from tables and figures should not be duplicated in the text, but only the most important ones should be mentioned.
  4. Discussion. You should highlight new and important aspects of your findings and, when possible, compare them with those of other researchers. You should not repeat the information from the Introduction section or the detailed data in the Results section. Reasoned recommendations and study design limitations can be included in the discussion.
  5. Conclusions. Please, be as accurate as possible in your conclusions and formulations.
  6. Guidelines for structure your manuscript. When writing an article, we recommend you to use the international guidelines for describing the relevant type of research available on the EQUATOR (Enhancing the Quality and Transparency of Health Research) resource https://www.equator-network.org/ :
    • STROBE 2007 (observational studies);
    • STARD 2015 (diagnostic studies);
    • CONSORT 2010 (randomised and non-randomised prospective controlled trials of treatment and prevention interventions);
    • TRIPOD 2015 (studies of diagnostic or prognostic models);
    • ARRIVE (animal studies);
    • CHEERS (clinical and economic research).
A review article structure

A review article should not only enumerate facts and present statement of the current state of the art. Even descriptive and narrative reviews should provide a new perspective or interpretation of the topic being described. Therefore, the discussion section is the obligatory part of the review manuscript (it can be allocated in a separate section or it can be systematically passed through the whole text).

  1. Introduction. It specifies all primary information sources used (full-text and abstract databases) and describes the search procedure (database names, filters and keywords, additional conditions for selecting primary sources).
  2. Sections. It would be great if the review manuscript contained graphic material to make the text easier to understand.
  3. Conclusion (designed as a whole text rather than numbered conclusions).
A case report article structure
  1. Relevance. The section should explain why the case is important. The optimal length is 1-3 paragraphs.
  2. Case Description.
  3. Discussion (should relate specifically to the case/series of cases presented in the article).
  4. Conclusion (theses summarizing the most significant thoughts that the reader should definitely remember from the article).
Reference list preparation

References should be organized according to the guidelines by U.S. National Information Standards Organization NISO Z39.29-2005 [R2010]) in AMA style (Journal of American Medical Association style, http://www.amamanualofstyle.com). The following are the principle points you should be aware of while preparing your manuscript for submission:

  • References should be numbered in the order in which they are cited.
  • Within the body of the text references should be provided in Arabic numerals enclosed in square brackets.
  • A complete list of all authors should be presented in every bibliographical entry. Please put an “et al.” notation after the third name if cited paper has more than 4 authors. Do not shorten titles of your citations. Shortened journal titles should correspond to the NLM Catalogue. If the journal is not indexed by MedLine, please provide its full title.
Illustrative materials design
  1. Illustrations should be in one of the following formats:
    • raster graphic — TIFF or JPG with resolution not less than 300 dpi;
    • vector graphic — AI, EPS, PDF.
  2. Fonts used must be enclosed separately or converted to curves.
  3. For the most accurate color reproduction, materials should be provided in the CMYK color model.
  4. Reference to a particular figure (table) should be inserted in the text before the place where the figure (table) is placed. The first mention of a figure or table in the text is marked in bold.
  5. The figure captions should be listed immediately below them. The general caption of the figure should be given first, followed by an explanation of all numerical and alphabetic symbols. Captions to microphotographs indicate the magnification level.
  6. Graphs are provided as separate files with appropriate excel data. In the captions to the graphs, the designations on axes and units of measurement should be indicated, and explanations should be given for each curve.
  7. Each table should be titled and numbered in according to its first mention in the text. Each column in the table should have a short title (abbreviations can be used). Gaps in rows (for lack of data) should be indicated by a dash sign. All explanations, including the decoding of abbreviations, should be placed in a note. The statistical methods used to present the variability of the data and the reliability of differences should also be indicated. Tables should not duplicate data given in the text.
  8. The dimensionality of the indicators and the form of data presentation (M±m; M±SD; Me; Mo; percentiles, etc.) should be clearly indicated in the footnote. All figures, totals and percentages should be carefully checked and should correspond to their mention in the text.
  9. It is not allowed to present the same materials in tabular and graphical forms.
  10. For previously published illustrations, it is necessary to indicate the original source and provide written permission for reproduction from their author (copyright holder).
